What is a Nursing Bra?
Put simply a nursing bra typically will have snaps or clips that release the front panel of the bra exposing the mothers’ breast, making it easier for her to nurse her baby.
And Then There Were Boobs….
During pregnancy the size of a woman’s breasts may change many times… or not at all! Some woman may even go up 2 cup sizes when all is said and done! But do not be alarmed, we have something to fit almost any shape or size.
We are all built differently so finding a nursing bra can be a bit of a guessing game, especially when buying one before the baby has arrived, but luckily at Moms to be…and More you will find staff members trained to help make this experience as pleasurable for you as possible.
The ideal time for a new mom to come and see us for a nursing bra is during the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy. The later in the pregnancy she comes in the easier it will be for the sales staff to predict her breast size once her milk comes in. It is usually 3-4 days after a woman gives birth that her breast will engorge with milk, and she will notice the size difference. Do not be surprised if during the fitting the sales associate helping you recommends a bra 1-2 cup sizes bigger then your current size. This is to leave room for the occurrence of engorgement as mentioned above.
Tip 1: Before you give birth we usually recommend getting 2-3 bras only – one for nights, one for days, and a nursing tank top for either sleep or for going out in warmer weather.
When purchasing a nursing bra with underwire it is recommended that you wait until your beastfeeding has been established, and your breasts are not as engorged (usually 6-8 weeks after giving birth). The reason being: many breastfeeding consultants don't recommend women wear underwire nursing bras in the first place. Underwire nursing bras have been linked to many cases of plugged milk ducts and mastitis. If the underwires press on the milk ducts, they can interfere with her milk flow, clogging the ducts, which then become infected. That is why it is important to wait. Once your size has stabilized, that would be the appropriate time wear an under wire bra. Don’t fret – we have several styles of Bravado nursing bras that provide support like an under wire bra, without the wire. Remember, not all woman are the same, therefore you have the final say in what feels the most comfortable for you, and you alone.

As if your boobs getting bigger wasn’t enough, believe it not when your milk comes in they may also leak when you don’t want them too. That’s where nursing pads come in. Nursing pads are placed inside the bra up against your skin and act as a barrier to absorb the leaking milk, keeping your skin dry. Nursing pads come in a disposable option (which are thinner) and washable option (bulkier but great for around the house).
Tip: Most women will use disposable pads while they are out and about, and reusable pads while at home. Disposables can be thrown out, and you won’t have to worry about bringing them home like reusables.
