So, you have your furniture and it’s up in the nursery but hold on…it just
doesn’t look like you thought it would! Do not stress….it is now time tohave some fun , and add some character & personaltouches to the room. Whether you know the sex of the baby or not the nursery can easily develop some a theme (and character!) First, decide on a clear
scheme, no more than three colours is a rule here., any more that three and itbegins to look messy. The trendis leaning towards a clean , crisp & simple set-up. (I will follow that rule, ads I present the Moms to be…and more ideas to you. Many nurseries are a continuation ofthe homes colour and style, with many companies developing juvenile furniture lines (i.e. Natart &
Shermag, Something Extra Bedding that willgrow withyour child. These lines make it easier to plan for the future. Assome of thesepurchases will move into a more mature juvenile setting as well. Beforefurniture is up in your nursery you should have discussed paint colours and flooring applications, both of which should be completed before you place your nursery furniture in the room.
Now I will share with you my thoughts about what to look for when purchasing various accessory pieces….
The most controversial piece is the bedding! At Moms to be…and More
we always advise that you do what you are comfortable with (this follows true in every section of our store) the
controversy that surrounds bumper pads (which automatically come in most bedding sets) is that they are not even needed at the baby stage. Bumpers are made for the older stages, when they are useful for preventing rolling munchkins from getting hands and feet caught in between crib bars. They are physically unable to even do this trick until 4 to 6 months old. The decision
is split between the following options-Buy a full bedding set and use the skirt and sheets until the baby is older, then utilize everything else as a set (bumpers and comforter) In the meantime you can use the quilt as a throw over the back of your glider to keep your shoulders warm during evening “meals”, or simply bring the chair into
the rooms theme. Your second option is to buy separates- a skirt and several sheets to start with and then add pieces later, as desired. The choice is yours and at Moms to be…and More we cater to all of these options. If you are going to purchase a full set have a look at these websites, for some beautiful options:
Some of these companies even offer the option of purchasing a moses basket ensemble, in the same pattern as your bedding set.

Another essential addition to the crib is a mobile, these are sensory stimulators that present the crib to your baby as a soothing, safe place to be by playing soft tunes or nature sounds at the press of a button (some even by remote!)
These items usually rotate allowing babies to focus on fun, friendly characters they associate with at bed time (and hopefully sleeptime!) Look at products from such companies as Tinylove, Lamaze, and Fisher Price. Please note that’s some full bedding sets come with matching accessories, including the mobile. Other options offered by these companies are activity centres, when motor skills improve.
Now that the crib is complete, let’s look at those freshly painted walls!
Murals are an option, if you have a strong theme in mind, you feel can work for a while. The are several other options available, which do not have the same “commitment” as a mural. The largest seller at Moms to be…and More, and its oh so easy is WallCandy. These are re-stickable, fun stickers which are offered in a variety of colours, shapes and motifs. These are a very affordable way to decorate, and the ability to re-stick makes it an incredibly flexible option.
KJ Tip: do not stick Wall Candy to freshly painted walls, let them cure for several days before getting creative. Check out the WallCandy website for simple design ideas.
Family photos and heirloom pictures are also a great addition to the baby’s room. Natural photography is stunning with today’s digitals cameras it’s easy & personal.
Many designers are showing painted shapes in contrasting hues abstractly placed for a uniqueness or even different widths painted on the walls. All of these ideas are being executed often by our clever clientele, and I would like to thank them for sharing their ideas.
Rugs and carpets are difficult to find it seems. Moms to be…and More has a great solution for you – custom rugs, at great prices. These are new to the store and exactly what people have been looking for. Natural wood, synthetic, and rag rugs in stunning colours are available; you can even have your child’s name placed on it! This line will be arriving the beginning of August, 2007.
Another fantastic addition to your child’s dresser are drawer pulls – this is a great way to transform “adult looking” furniture, to juvenile furniture, for the time being, with the option to change knobs are the child grows! Ingenious! There are wide varieties to choose from, come and check them out.
Other great accessories for the nursery are:
The number one (in our opinion) The Baby Monitor; this clever device
allows you to (and some options offer video viewing as well) what the baby is up to, when you are out of the room. This is key! your baby learns to sleep on it’s own in the beautiful environment which you have created for them and you have the peace of mind that the baby is safe and happily, cooing, sleeping, and even talking to itself (later on). The monitor allows you to carry on with other duties, or resting, which you also need to do. We offer many options for monitors- check out these websites:
Other electronics you may consider for the baby’s room are air purifiers and humidifiers, when houses are extremely dry, or baby seems to be a little stuffed up, these machines can be miracle workers!
Some parents love white noise machines like the Obus Forme Sensory
Therapy machine, that creates a background noise for baby’s to be hushed to sleep by, these prove particularly useful when you are changing their sleeping environment (holidays, cottages etc), and you keep the white noise machine consistent- baby’s lull to sleep with the familiar background noise.
Another must have is a thermometer, the latest on the market allows you to take your baby’s temperature in two seconds, by ear or forehead. It also have features such as a night time flashlight, 20 temp memory, and a digital clock & calendar. When baby’s get fevers it is very important to know the exact temperature, in order to give your pediatrician correct information when talking fevers.
