 | | | | | | If you want to leave the house with your baby, chances are you are going to want a diaper bag to tote along all the essential. Going out with a new baby is no simple feat; making sure that you have the right diaper bag is half the battle. Things to look for when looking for a diaper bag? Pockets, pockets, pockets! Pockets will help you keep your bag organized, which in turn will allow you to access what you need when you need it. It is also handy if your diaper bag attaches to your stroller. This makes it more accessible than being underneath your stroller. If your diaper bag doesn’t come with clips to attach it to a stroller, don’t worry, you can always buy them separately! Lastly, most moms will stop carrying a purse in exchange for a diaper bag, so finding something that suits your personal style is a must!
There are a few different styles of bags to look out for:
Messenger Style
Messenger style usually refers to a bag with a long strap that can be worn across your body. Examples of this would be the bags from Skip Hop, JJ Cole, Ju Ju Be and Peg Perego. Each of these bags will have different features within them while keeping true to the Messenger Style.
Totes
A tote bag will usually have two smaller handles making it ideal for carrying like a purse. Examples of this would be the tote bags from Ju Ju Be and Petunia Pickle Bottom.
Back Packs
For those of you out there who would rather use a back pack, do it in style with the back pack by Petunia Pickle Bottom. This is not your child’s backpack! It is available in many fashionable fabrics . If you are looking for something a little more stream line, check out the back pack by Skip Hop, for a sleek urban look.
What’s in your diaper bag?
Once you've selected your perfect bag, it's time to fill it with the essentials for the trip. What to put in it:
- Diapers: Cloth or disposable, whichever you're using. Pack at least one diaper for every hour you plan on being out plus a couple extra just in case.
- Wet wipes: These are lifesavers during diaper changes. Always have a full container in your bag.
- A changing pad: Many diaper bags have them "built in” or attached. If yours doesn't, pack a thin waterproof pad to place on the surface before you change baby.
- Antiseptic hand wash: If you're changing baby in the car or some other place without water, you'll want to sanitize your hands afterwards.
- Travel size products: If you're using powders, ointments or lotions, carry smaller bottles of the product in the bag.
- A blanket or burp pad: For feeding time.
- A change of clothes: Because "explosions” can happen at any time
-A bottle of baby Tylenol: Teething, coughs and sniffles can lead to low-grade fevers; be prepared.
- Empty plastic bags: For dirty clothes and diapers.
- Toys: Take along a few favorites for quick distractions in case of a melt down.
- Soother or Pacifier: If you are using them bring along a couple in case one goes missing or falls somewhere it shouldn’t
These items can be packed and ready to go at an time. The day of your outing, add bottles, formula or pumped breast milk, and whatever else you'll need for feeding during the day.
