SWADDLING
The method of swaddling involves wrapping the baby snugly in a blanket confining their arms from moving. This may sound cruel but swaddling can soothe infants and reduce symptoms of colic (A condition that affects about 10 to 30 percent of all infants. Frequent crying episodes lasting three or more hours, gas, and abdominal pain are characteristic signs and symptoms) by recreating the familiar, comforting snugness of the womb. At the newborn stage babies don’t have control over their movements; swaddling helps reduce the incidence of the startle reflex, which can be upsetting for babies and increase the frequency of waking and crying.

Swaddling blankets come in a variety of shapes, weights and colours.  There is even a variety that has velcro for fastening called the
Swaddle Me, which makes it especially easy for first time exhausted parents. Other brands available include the Miracle Blanket, and the gr8x swaddling blanket.

It is important to know that not all babies will be comforted by full swaddling.  Babies, who sucked on their hands or held their hands close to their face in the womb, will usually not take to swaddling as they have already become accustomed to comforting themselves with their hands. To take that habit away from them at such an early age (when, let’s face it, life must be overwhelming at first) might cause more headache then its worth! If you think your baby falls under this category please see the Sleepsac section for another alternative.
